In 2014, I reached out to Frederick S. Keller, MD, FSIR—SIR Foundation’s former development division chair and a dear friend. I mentioned that when I thought of my legacy, I believed SIR should be one of the places I reached out to, but that I wasn’t sure what was possible.
I knew I wanted to give something that would remind people that an individual can make an impact—a change for the better in this giant scientific world of medicine. I also wanted to draw attention to the importance of research at all levels, especially the young minds of medical students, who are some of the most enthusiastic and inventive minds in medicine.
Dr. Keller reached out to SIR Foundation Chair Stephen T. Kee, MD, MMM, FSIR. With the assistance of SIR Foundation’s Board of Directors, I am pleased to report that my wife and I have made the impact we desired through a gift that will support the foundation’s mission, including medical student training and research funding.
We are excited to establish an SIR Foundation Named Fund for Research—the Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Culp Named Fund for Medical Student Research. We are also humbled this has led to the foundation’s naming of the Dr. and Mrs. W.C. Culp Student Research Grant for the next decade in honor of our gift.
There are plenty of unanswered health care problems to go around, large and small; for me it is stroke, where there remains a huge unmet need. Each of us can name a similar area that has personal meaning worth pursuing. The history of IR shows that when we apply our minds and techniques to these challenges, we can push the frontier forward, just as we have done repeatedly over the last 40 years.
Mirroring the past, I believe even more new areas of excellence in IR will address the unmet needs of patients as we encourage and inspire the next generation of innovation. If you have found meaning and value in the great strides IR has provided for our generation, I hope you will consider paying it forward and supporting the research that will develop and define similar leaps forward in the future. SIR Foundation is an excellent way to do it and tailor it to your own priorities.
Through our SIR Foundation Named Fund for Research Excellence, we are ensured our gift will directly touch the lives of medical students and encourage them to become physician scientists and advance the science and practice of IR—today and for many years to come.
I encourage you to support what you believe in. For me, it is IR research and development—innovation and science applied to real medical problems.
